3.) What motivates you to apply for this position?
I have been a strong supporter since I first discovered the IOTA community in 2017. Investing is what first brought me to the space. The community and the vision of a zero fee Tangle that decentralizes power and directs it to the users rather than to miners or stakers, is what has kept my interest. I vehemently believe in IOTA as a decentralized economy built on an open protocol that cherishes the users, allows freedom of access, and offers inclusivity.
I am not a developer and have wondered in what way I can support the community. I started moderating the IOTA Facebook page along with Eric Hop to get involved. Once the IOTA community treasury funds were announced on 28 April, 2021 (IOTA Community Treasury and Genesis Validation) it was then that I found a place to utilize my skills. I started attending weekly meetings, built governance framework flows, and finally wrote my medium article: IOTA â To Burn or To Build (IOTA â To Burn or To Build. An attempted summary of where the⌠| by JD Sutton | Medium). I am grateful for the opportunity to use my ability and passions to the inspire the Burn vs. Build term which later was the first governance vote within the Firefly wallet.
Not only am I passionate about decentralized governance but I am deeply passionate about the Shimmer, Assembly, and IOTA ecosystem. Seeing the growth of the ecosystem directly through a streamlined and efficient web process that allows for quality, speed of funding, and follow-up, is what truly motivates me. I have treasured being involved in this process for nearly two years with the community and IOTA Foundation representatives. My goal is to involve the members and represent the communityâs consensus. Nothing would be more satisfying to me then representing the community as a delegate for the Program Lead position and to be able to support building one of the best community grant organizations within the crypto space.

5.) What experience do you have that is relevant to this position?
In 2019 when being tasked with Director of Field Operations and Mechanical Integrity I was assigned the role and responsibility of building the department from the ground up. At the time there was a single client in which the project had six to eight months left and no other future clients in place. I was tasked with everything from hiring all employees and contractors, attending sales meetings, supporting the closing of any deals, received all request for proposals (RFPs) and submitted such proposals on behalf of the department. I also organized all project planning documentation, managed all projects as primary project manager, and in times of need, filled in on site visits when required.
My main strength is building processes and programs to help an organization grow from the ground up and reach scalability. This is what I have been building for the Shimmer Community Treasury through the different Notion sheets found here (Notion â The all-in-one workspace for your notes, tasks, wikis, and databases.). Further, I will continue building these processes to allow for an efficient grant proposal submittal portal, real-time tracking, and management by the review team. Most importantly, the ability to track the funded projects through the lifecycle, milestones, and particularly to completion. This is a known weakness within the space which I plan to solve. As well, along the way I will build the program to ensure transparency and allow the community to be a part of the process.
6.) In your opinion, which of the skills you obtain are the most important and valuable for this Grant Committee Lead position? If possible, provide proof of how and where you obtained those skills.
I have always been interested in technology and automation. Therefore, I taught myself to create and implement web-based business applications and integrations. This, with my experience of writing, submitting, and managing proposals is exactly what the community treasury needs. I feel that we need a streamlined grant application method, expert review process, and follow up management and transparency for the community.
Another set of skills that is not necessarily IOTA & Shimmer specific, but I feel has supported me in my career as a director and leader is the fact that I have worked in nearly every region of the world. For eight years I lived in Southeast Asia predominately in Bali, Indonesia and Chiang Mai, Thailand. During those years I started my career as a diver, subsea inspection coordinator, and subsea project manager. Projects were predominately in Malaysian waters and the German sector of the North Sea, but I also worked in: Myanmar, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Qatar, Dubai, Congo, Angola, Nigeria, Germany, Norway, and Denmark. Further, I spent one year working as a subsea project manager in Lagos, Nigeria. Working with global teams and international supply chain I learned that no one culture does things the same, nor does anyone culture do things perfectly. It is crucial to always have an open mind when working within a global organization and ensure focus is on the vision and prioritize teamwork within the group and ensure good communication and understanding.
7.) Are you a software developer? If yes, please provide info on your skills and proof of the projects you already have built/worked on (Github, languages, certificates, etc.)
I am not a software developer though I have used and am proficient with web tools such as Notion, SmartSheets, Google Tools, and MS Office to build automated data acquisition and management tools to support business applications. I have also basic Linux knowledge and have run multiple different IOTA and ICT nodes over the past five years. In the future I plan to take some introductory courses in coding.
8.) Are you willing to reveal and verify your identity through a KYC process? Will you also sign a binding contract as a full-time team member with the legal entity of the Shimmer Community Treasury Committee?
Note: KYC is required for this position. If you are not willing to KYC and sign a full-time contract with the Shimmer Community Treasury legal entity, you will not be accepted to this position.
Yes - I have filled out numerous KYC applications and documentation and would be happy to KYC if voted to the position of Program Lead. I am willing to KYC and sign a full-time contract with the Shimmer Community Treasury.
9.) Can you commit to focusing the next 12 months solely on the Shimmer Community Treasury as Program Lead and be available 40 hrs a week, if not a bit more? As the Program Lead, you will not be able to work other side jobs or support other Dapp projects regularly. If acting against this, the committee will seek a replacement at that time.
Yes - given my real-estate portfolio and investments, the salary suffices to continue my lifestyle and focus my time solely to managing the Shimmer Community Treasury DAO while always representing the community for the next 12 months. I am willing to focus all my time supporting the Shimmer Community Treasury as Program Lead for the next 12 months. Which of course would be a dream come true to be able to focus full time on my one passion in life!
10.) As the Program Lead, you most likely will support the Shimmer Community Treasuriesâ interest in the Growth Committee. This may require more time above and beyond the 40 hrs (paid hourly, of course). Are you willing to commit to this?
Yes â I have no affiliations to other crypto projects at present. My time will be solely dedicated to the Shimmer Community Treasury and the Shimmer Growth Committee. All my real-estate and other investments are passive investments that do not require any time focus. I am willing to represent the community by participating in the Growth Committee with whatever time requirements are required.
11.) As a member of the Shimmer Growth committee, are you willing to sign a service provider contract with the Tangle Ecosystem Association and respect the included Non-Disclosure Agreement? Breaking the contract or Non-Disclosure Agreement may bring consequences financially and or legally.
Yes - I have filled out several NDAs in the past throughout my career. I am willing and happy to sign a service provider contract and a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with the Tangle Ecosystem Association and absolutely will respect all binding effects within such agreement contracts.
12.) Provide any web links or supporting documentation you would like the community to see when assessing you for the Shimmer Community Treasury Lead position.
Below is an assortment of links showing a bit of the web work I have created for my business, the Shimmer Community Treasury, and the IOTA ecosystem.
I created an LLC for myself as I transitioned more to working as a contract and consultant. To show my ability to oversee marketing and web form portals, see my company website that I built with a designer.
As well, the below link is the staffing recruitment page I created. The link bring up a web form that then populates a master sheet in which HR can vet, onboard, and use when selecting contractors for projects.

13.) Do you have affiliations with any Crypto projects? The community would like to know particularly if you are involved with projects as a creator, on the board, or employed. Please list any projects or applications you have affiliations to.
*Note: The program lead is not allowed to hold any paid position in any crypto project to ensure that the sole focus of work is on the Community Treasury. Please state current affiliations and ensure the community that you will quit any engagements in projects outside the Community Treasury should you be selected as Lead
The only affiliations I have is with the IOTA & Shimmer Governance. To date I have solely focused my time on Community Governance and the Shimmer Treasury over the past two years. Outside of IOTA & Shimmer I focus on my family, our homestead, my real-estate portfolio, and my career. Through smart investing and acquiring a couple rental properties, my wife and I are semi-retired living off our passive income our careers part-time. Luckily, I can take a year or two off from renewables and the petrochemical industry but still maintain my contacts and skills. In short, I do not have any affiliations nor any conflicts of interest if elected and delegated as the Program Lead. This is a dream come true where I can devote myself fulltime and solely to the Shimmer and IOTA ecosystem.
14.) What is your long-term vision of the Shimmer Community Treasury? How do you see the Community Treasury affecting the Shimmer & IOTA ecosystem, and what does the Shimmer & IOTA Ecosystem look to you in three years?
I think just as important is oneâs view on the short-term which ultimately builds to the long-term. For the short-term, I believe the focus should be on low-risk grant funding that will have positive gains expanding the ecosystem. The treasuries focus should first be on improving Shimmer and IOTAâs reputation by funding community and educational outreach programs. The outreach programs I foresee are meetups, conferences, hackathons, etc. Additionally, an initial focus to educate and built the reputation is to conduct marketing campaigns, something that the IOTA Foundation hasnât been able to do due to the German regulatory bindings. Always, a primary goal should be able to support developers and projects looking to build on the Shimmer network. We can either provide direct grant funding or also funding of technical consultants that can support projects reach success.
My long-term vision for the Shimmer Community Treasury has and will always be a long-lasting treasury that evolves to be self-replenishing which can support the Shimmer & IOTA ecosystem for the life of the networks. The first two years should be focused on bolstering the $SMR price and thus overall value of the treasury itself. Once the treasury grows above $50 million, I feel there is sufficient funding to start more high risk and creative grant funding, which will pay back and bring returns to the Treasury on an annual basis. A circular affect would then take affect growing autonomously while ever growing the ecosystem which then supports the growth of the treasury valuation. It is imperative that we protect the Treasury so that it cannot only last the first couple years before being self-sustaining, but also, that the first year 15% allotted funding will support grants to all tiers throughout the entire 12 months and not run out. Additionally, it is key that within the first year we can cover the committeeâs running costs but also stay lean while being as productive as possible.
As stated I believe the Community Treasury can be a tremendous asset to growing the Shimmer ecosystem and overall market cap. By funding grants of all tiers and particularly focusing on other avenues than the Tangle Ecosystem Association and the Growth Committee, we can build the best community governed treasury in the crypto space.
