[Discussion] Shimmer token units and potential changes

I was not sure to choose between option 1 and 2. But I decided for 2, because Assembly also has a different system. so it is ok… i think there are no cons…

my opinion is
MIOTA must also be changed to IOTA.
1,000,000 old IOTA => 1.0 new IOTA

I think changing IOTA is possible, it will just take quite some effort. Lets see how it is first perceived with Shimmer and then we can change IOTA as well

In my eyes it feels a is a bit strange to drop tokens and change the supply before even got started with the network.

I agree that this seems to be the main discussion to have right now. Majority of the people seem to agree that moving Shimmer to decimal is the best option out of the three.

The main question now is whether we should use 6 or 5 decimal points.

My personal opinion is 5 decimal points, simply because of the lower price. Curious to hear what other people think

Just for comparison, this is what we’re looking at:

5 decimal places:

For example: 100.000 Old SMR = 1 SMR token
New total supply: 14508964072,49092
Smallest denomination: 0.00001

Market Cap Token Price Token Supply
$10,000,000 $0.0006892291 14508964072
$50,000,000 $0.0034461454 14508964072
$100,000,000 $0.0068922908 14508964072
$250,000,000 $0.0172307271 14508964072
$500,000,000 $0.0344614541 14508964072
$1,000,000,000 $0.0689229083 14508964072

6 decimal places

For example: 1.000.000 Old SMR = 1 SMR token
New total supply: 1450896407,249092
Smallest denomination: 0.000001

Market Cap Token Price Token Supply
$10,000,000 $0.006892291 1450896407
$50,000,000 $0.034461454 1450896407
$100,000,000 $0.068922908 1450896407
$250,000,000 $0.172307271 1450896407
$500,000,000 $0.344614541 1450896407
$1,000,000,000 $0.689229083 1450896407

imho, 5 decimal is far enough considering what it means in terms of value, even if price go to moon

imo 6 decimals because most of the users are kind of used to it: its the scientific way of using decimals: 10^-3, 10^-6 etc.

  1. as it needs to be able to go to $1.33.

I think 6 decimals make more sense logically and scientific spoken. Also think that “lower price” is not really a great argument. I know that some beginner traders have this feeling that they are in a great position if they can buy tokens at a really low price (which is only a psychological effect) - but that shouldn/t be the major point of decision. I personally would prefer to handle not that many 00 behind the comma and see Shimmer one day in a range that we don’t need to care about the comma anymore
So yepp, preferably 6 decimals with a price of 0.689 at 1 Billion mcap sounds better for me.

6 decimal places for sure!
I was a big fan of using MSMR at first, but using 6 decimals would make it absolutely consistent with this (There is same amount of SMR with 6 decimals like there would be MSMR) and would still allow us to use the ‘native’ denomination of SMR in whole units, which pleases everybody. The smallest units could then be called ‘microSMR’ (with the greek micro sign). I like it!

The only sensible option is option 2 imo. Please, for the love of god, get rid of the scientific denomination

Also, dont be afraid of adding more supply as long as the decimal point is set correctly. Remember, ethereum has 18 digits after the decimal point. There’s no point in creating a relatively small supply and potentially running into issues in the future.

I plead for 6 decimals.
Many of the users who have been supporting IOTA for years by holding the coins long term have all staked their MIOTA.

A higher price increases the value of the reward the community has received from staking.

why not to want Shimmer to be listed everywhere?

I agree with the decisions of putting 6 decimals :+1: Great discussion!

Dear Community,
We are in early stages of decentralized governance. Wonderful to see involvement and interest.
As we grow our governance, we need to absorb as we experience our early steps. My humble recommendation is that we deal with issues that are justifiable necessary until we mature a bit more. Unless this is something needed before SMR minting, why is this needed now? SMR is already followed - pre-minting - by the likes of CoinMarketCap and exchanges deal with all type of values.
Thanks for your consideration.
